The conference witnessed inspiring lectures and discussions from 37 national and international expert speakers about the latest in research and guidelines in clinical microbiology. Topics included antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance and the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare in the UAE. Considering the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28, the urgent topic of how microbiologists can address climate change and help achieve the UN sustainable development goals was another major area discussed.

Other key topics were lessons learnt from the Covid-19 pandemic, advances in diagnostics, healthcare associated infections and distinct areas such as microbiome-based therapeutic tools, gene-microbiota interactions as well as antifungal stewardship. The conference was attended by professionals in healthcare, clinical laboratory, pathology and industry specialists along with students and professors from various UAE universities. The event also hosted oral and poster presentations of research students (at UG, PG and PhD levels), post-doctoral researchers and professors and recognized the best projects at the end of the event. The conference turned out to be successful in highlighting the region's perspective in clinical microbiology research and development with renewed inspiration for tackling challenges.

2022

I was asked to join the Scientific Committee of the Emirates Society of Clinical Microbiology (ESCM) in August 2022, after being a committee member since January 2022. The ESCM is part of the Emirates Medical Association (EMA) that was established in 1981 as a non-profit organization by the Ministry of Social Affairs to be the leader in the field of Clinical Microbiology in the UAE and the region. The aims of ESCM are to respond to the local needs of clinical Microbiologists, to encourage interactions and collaborations, to promote scientific knowledge, education and professional development and to raise public awareness in the Clinical Microbiology field.
